Sad Books are Bad Books?

A Series of Unfortunate EventsThis is unbelievable, when I ran across this website on MetaFilter I thought it was a joke.

However, The Happy Ending Foundation (THEF) does exist (and apparently doesn’t have the slightest thing to do with what I first thought it meant. :) ).

They’re goal… rewrite sad children stories so they have happy endings:

THEF was originally founded in 2000 by Adrienne Small after she read the first book in A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket to her daughter…

Mrs Small has now left her career as a tax inspector to focus on THEF full-time. She plans to rewrite all 13 Lemony Snicket books to give them happy endings.

Sad Books are Bad Books.

WTF?! This is just crazy… how far does this go?

As a society we keep padding and obscuring our children from the truth in the belief that we are keeping them safe.

In the end we’re creating a society of young adults who will have never learned from their mistakes and who will think that without any effort everything will magically have a storybook ending.

UPDATE:

Too much support may hamper kids’ development – Reuters

…children whose parents showed differing levels of support fared best, showing greater emotional understanding and less conflict with friends. Children whose parents were highly supportive actually fared worse.
